GINGER
Zingiber officinale also called ‘Ginger’ is a root plant whose rhizome or ginger root is widely used as spice or folk medicine.
OVERVIEW

PRODUCTION
Southern Kaduna in Nigeria, has come to be known as the traditional home for ginger as they are cultivated in the rainforest region. Places like Kafancha, Kagoro, Kachia, Zonkwa, Jaba and Kubach of Kaduna state has remained the most important grower of ginger in Nigeria. In addition, places like Nasarawa, Benue, Niger and Gombe have also contributed to the production of ginger in Nigeria.
Ginger is popularly known to be exported as split and sun dried. It may also be exported as fresh and natural but this is mostly done immediately after harvest due to a shorter shelf life it has.
Split and sun drying is done to meet supply schedule. This tends to boost the shelf life of ginger so it can be exported on longer voyage and then further preserved. Splitting is used in place of slicing because the ginger flavour is being retained that way. Another form by which ginger can also be exported is by grinding into powder form.
Nigeria is believed to be the third largest exporter of ginger in the world after China and India. A large percentage is being exported to UK, Germany, France, USA, China and other African countries such as Ghana. The season for ginger runs from May through October, and supply runs for almost nine months
